IYCF

Window of Opportunity promotes optimal Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF).   Optimal IYCF reduces underweight, stunting, wasting, micronutrient deficiencies, and ultimately child deaths.

We promote optimal IYCF by:

  • Optimal nutrition for women
  • Antenatal care by medical professionals
  • Prevention of vitamin A deficiency for women and children
  • Immediate initiation of breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact and feeding of colostrum
  • Exclusive, frequent, and on-demand breastfeeding for the child’s first six months of life
  • Timely and optimal complementary feeding starting at six months of age, with continued breastfeeding to two years old and beyond
  • Responsive feeding that is sensitive to the child’s hunger and satiety cues and that also ensures a conducive psychosocial environment, so the child consumes a nutritionally adequate diet
  • Optimal nutritional care of sick and severely malnourished children
  • Support for the 2009/2010 WHO guidelines on HIV and infant feeding
  • Good hygiene practices/ hand washing (i.e., after defecation, after handling child’s feces/cleaning bottom/changing, before food preparation, before eating and before feeding a child)
  • Safe preparation and storage of complementary foods
